Volunteers Lee Mengo and Mark Take on One of the World’s Greatest Treks to Support Hospitality and Hope in Swansea
At Matthew’s House Swansea, we are continually amazed by the lengths people will go to in support of others.
Recently, two of our incredible supporters, Lee Mengo and Mark, completed an unforgettable challenge on the other side of the world, trekking sections of the Great Wall of China to raise funds for Matthew’s House.
And what a difference they have made.
Together, they raised an incredible £959.98, including Gift Aid, providing vital support for the work we do every day with people facing homelessness, addiction, poverty, isolation and mental health challenges across Swansea.
The achievement is remarkable.
The Great Wall of China is one of the most challenging and iconic walks in the world. Steep climbs, uneven terrain, demanding conditions and long days of trekking test both physical and mental endurance.
Reflecting on the challenge, Lee said:
“Walking the Great Wall of China was an extremely challenging experience, with steep climbs, uneven terrain, and long days of trekking. However, every step was incredibly rewarding, and the sense of achievement at the end made all the hard work worthwhile.
Knowing that we were raising money for Matthew’s House gave us extra motivation throughout the journey and made the entire experience even more meaningful. It was a challenge we will never forget, and one that was absolutely worth it.”
What makes stories like this so special is that the impact reaches far beyond the fundraising total.
Every pound raised helps Matthew’s House continue offering hospitality and hope to those who need it most. It helps provide meals, support, community, dignity, practical help and encouragement for people navigating some of the toughest moments of their lives.
It also reminds us of something powerful.
Ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they care about others.
Lee and Mark chose to use their adventure to make a difference for people they may never meet. They pushed themselves physically, gave their time generously and inspired others to support the cause along the way.
We are genuinely in awe of what they have achieved.
To Lee and Mark, thank you.
Thank you for every mile walked.
Thank you for every step climbed.
Thank you for every donation encouraged.
And thank you for believing in Matthew’s House.
You are heroes to us.
And if you have a challenge in mind, whether it’s a walk, run, cycle, swim, trek, mountain climb, skydive or something completely different, we would love to hear from you.
Fundraisers like this make a huge difference to Matthew’s House and the people we support.
You never know where one challenge could lead.
Perhaps your adventure could be the next story that helps change lives in Swansea.
