Greenhill Gardens was created to preserve and celebrate the natural and historic beauty of this special urban green space. With heritage features, blooming flowerbeds, and open lawns, it offers a peaceful escape in the city. The Gardens are maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers and supported by Matthew’s House as an expression of Hospitality and Hope.

  • Community Wellbeing: A green space for reflection, relaxation, and outdoor activity.
  • Heritage Preservation: Protecting the history and character of the Gardens for future generations.
  • Learning & Discovery: Educational opportunities for schools, families, and visitors.

Greenhill Gardens is a once-in-a-lifetime project to respectfully transform the historic graveyard at Matthew’s House into a vibrant, safe, and inspiring heritage greenspace at the heart of Swansea’s High Street.

Our Journey

What began as a dream eight years ago is now becoming a powerful reality — and we are officially underway! Supported by incredible local professionals, archaeologists, and the outstanding NP Landscaping team, we are carefully and sensitively preparing the site with the utmost respect for its history.

As we deliver this much-needed urban green space, we will celebrate the lives of those who were buried here, honour the history and struggles of the Greenhill community, and create something beautiful for generations to come.

Greenhill Gardens will feature:
🌿 Spaces for private conversations and moments of reflection with guests
🌿 Habitat walls supporting local wildlife
🌿 Outdoor cooking areas and seating spaces to bring the community together
🌿 Dedicated areas to honour the heritage and story of the land

Our journey has involved archaeological discoveries, careful reburials, and an amazing collaboration between Matthew’s House, Church in Wales Faculty Permissions, Swansea Council Listed Buildings and Planning teams, Welsh Government Cadw, and other professional bodies. Every step is being documented to share as we go and when complete where the journey will get better as you are invited to visit us!

📧 If you’d like to learn more, support the project, or follow along with the journey, please contact us at greenhillgardens@matthewshouse.org.uk.

Together, we’ve built a space of remembrance, hope, and connection — a new green heart for our city. 🌱
