Inspiring Heritage Connections with the Next Generation at Greenhill Gardens
In October 2025, Greenhill Gardens came alive with energy, laughter, and curiosity as more than 30 children and leaders from the Sketty Scout and Beaver groups arrived for an unforgettable evening of discovery.
Once a closed and overgrown graveyard, Greenhill Gardens has been lovingly transformed into a place of life, learning, and remembrance, a true oasis of history and hope in the heart of Swansea. For the children who visited, it became a playground of imagination and connection to the past.
With colourful Time Traveller Passports in hand, they set off on Tarran’s Trail, our family-friendly heritage route guided by Tarran, a fictional time-travelling teenager who leads young explorers through ten fascinating stops across the gardens. Along the way, they uncovered real local stories, solved clues, drew stamps, and reflected on how the people buried here helped shape the Swansea we know today.
As the evening came to a close, one parent shared a line that melted our hearts:
“I went back in time tonight!”
That moment summed up exactly what we dreamed this project would be, a space that sparks curiosity, captures imaginations, and helps young people see history not as something old and forgotten, but alive and full of meaning.
Scout leaders said they were “so impressed with the setup, the space, and the thoughtfulness of the trail.” Volunteers supporting the visit shared how moving it was to watch children enjoying a site that once stood silent, now filled with laughter, stories, and life once again.
Greenhill Gardens continues to welcome visitors of all ages, from schools and Scouts to community groups and families. It’s a place where learning, reflection, and togetherness meet, and where history truly feels alive.
