This December, Matthew’s House had the privilege of once again joining the annual Together at Christmas event at the Brangwyn Hall, a remarkable gathering coordinated by JR Events and Catering and Shannon Williams. Now in its ninth year, the event has become a powerful expression of kindness and unity in Swansea, especially for those who need it most.
The Brangwyn was filled with warmth and purpose as hundreds of Christmas meals were served with care and dignity. Alongside the food, guests were able to access haircuts, clothing, toiletries, food items and support from a wide network of local charities and services. The atmosphere was one of generosity, welcome and connection, where every person was valued and no one was rushed.
For our Matthew’s House team, it was an honour to sit at tables among guests, share a meal, chat, encourage and above all listen. Being part of a room filled with so many volunteers, community organisations and supporters reminded us of the collective effort behind hope in Swansea. Several of our own volunteers joined us for the day, adding their energy and compassion to a memorable occasion.
We were also deeply grateful to receive a £400 donation from Swansea Council Labour councillors, raised through their longstanding tradition of wearing Christmas jumpers at the final Full Council meeting of the year. The donation was presented to Thom Lynch during the event.
Cllr Wendy Lewis, Councillor Champion for Councillor Support, shared her appreciation for the work of Matthew’s House and the importance of supporting organisations that offer practical and emotional help across the city.
Council Leader Rob Stewart also expressed ongoing commitment to working alongside Matthew’s House, recognising the vital role hospitality and kindness play during the winter months as part of the wider Here For You This Winter campaign.
This gift, along with the encouragement that came with it, will help us continue to offer meals, hot showers, laundry services, dignity packs and a rich network of support at Matthew’s House.
The day was a celebration of community at its best.
A reminder that sharing a table together is one of the most powerful acts of hospitality.
A recognition that hope is built through many hands, many voices and many hearts.
We are thankful to every volunteer, partner and supporter who made Together at Christmas possible and to everyone who continues to stand with us in caring for the vulnerable in our city.
A special thank you to JR Events and Catering, Shannon Williams, Swansea Council and the many service providers who helped create another unforgettable year.
Together, we keep building hospitality and hope in Swansea.
