On our third session inside Swansea Prison, we were welcoming the group and introducing ourselves when one man stood up and said:
“I know Matt’s Café… on the High Street… seriously guys… that place saves lives.”
What an introduction.
Moments like that stop you in your tracks. Honest. Unfiltered. Real.
We carried on, sang a few songs, and as we often do, paused halfway through. These moments are always a mix of powerful, raw, and sometimes unexpected conversations. There is laughter, there is honesty, and there are often some choice words thrown in too.
One man shared about his last time being released.
He had been told there was a job waiting for him. Hope was there. A fresh start felt possible. But when he arrived, the job had actually been completed six months earlier. That moment hit hard.
Disappointment turned into frustration.
Frustration turned into blame.
And before long, it led him back into poor choices.
We sat in that moment together.
Then we gently reminded him of something simple but powerful.
You have to keep going.
Keep fighting.
Take hold of what you can.
And go again.
These are the real conversations happening in these sessions. Not polished. Not perfect. But honest, human, and full of opportunity.
Because sometimes, change starts with someone being willing to say the truth out loud. And someone else being there to say, “There is still more ahead for you.”
And that is why we show up.
