Some of the most special moments at Matthew’s House don’t come during planned meetings or grand events — they happen quietly, unexpectedly, in the in-between.
Recently, one of our new team members had a visit from a longtime supporter of Matthew’s House — a woman with deep roots in Greenhill and a personal connection to the original church that continues to stand where we now serve. She came bearing donations — a few pairs of shoes and bags from herself and her husband — but it quickly became clear she was carrying far more than that.
What followed was a heartfelt conversation that wove together her family’s history, her husband’s journey with dementia, and her enduring connection to this space — a space that has meant so much to so many over the generations.
She pulled a small photo album from her handbag, lovingly sharing her wedding day, her children’s milestones, and treasured memories of family and faith. It was deeply moving. Despite the challenges she’s currently navigating, she said something that stopped us in our tracks:
“I choose to have a positive view of any situation I’m in. I’ve adapted. And I’ve had a lovely life — which not a lot of people get to say.”
She spoke with warmth, gratitude, and a sense of peace — not despite the struggles, but through them.
She shared that she’d never gone without food or clothing, and it was because of this that she continues to support the work of Matthew’s House — donating, giving, and cheering us on as we serve those who aren’t as fortunate.
“It’s wonderful what you all do,” she said.
“That’s why I give when I can.”
It was a simple visit. But for the team that day, it was a moment of perspective, legacy, and encouragement.
This place means something. It always has. And as we carry the stories of the past, we continue to build hope for the future — together, one conversation at a time.
