Scouts and Beavers Bring History to Life at Greenhill Gardens
This October, Greenhill Gardens came alive with excitement as more than 30 children and leaders from the Sketty Scout and Beaver Groups set off on a very special adventure — a journey through Swansea’s past!
Their visit was part of the Beavers’ Community Impact Badge, designed to help young people explore and connect with their community. The evening began at Matthew’s House, where Dan from our team shared the story of Greenhill Gardens — once an overgrown, locked graveyard, now a place full of life, history, and hope.
Then came the highlight: Tarran’s Trail, a fun, child-friendly walk led by a fictional time-travelling teenager. With colourful passports in hand, the children followed ten trail points, solving clues, drawing stamps, and uncovering stories of the people who shaped Swansea.
One young visitor summed it up perfectly:
“I went back in time tonight!”
Their Scout Leader later shared:
“The young people were completely captivated and truly believed they had been time-travelling with Tarran. It’s so hard to make local history exciting for a young audience — but the team at Matthew’s House have absolutely nailed it.”
Moments like this are what Greenhill Gardens is all about — helping people of every age connect with history, nature, and one another in a place that was once forgotten.
