At Matthew’s House, our volunteers aren’t just helpers—they’re family. The work we do to bring hope and support to others wouldn’t be possible without them, and that’s why we make it a priority to care for them too.
One of our volunteers recently faced a tough situation. Their car had been stolen, and with it came a mountain of parking fines—rising to over £600. To make things even more difficult, they struggle with dyslexia, making the process of completing the necessary forms overwhelming.
Thankfully, the police had been supportive, providing evidence to help challenge the fines. The volunteer had already paid what they had to, but we offered to sit down and help them with the forms—to make their case and hopefully recover the money they had lost.
Their response?
“Do you know what, you lot really care about me.”
And they’re right. Because at Matthew’s House, we believe in looking after the people who give their time and energy to look after others. Whether it’s a warm meal, a listening ear, or something as practical as filling out a form, we stand by our volunteers just as much as they stand by us.
They are part of us. 💛
