Recently, we met a new guest who was directed to us by another support service. When they arrived, they were quiet and apologetic—perhaps unsure of what to expect. But as they settled in, enjoyed a warm meal and a drink in our bright café, and experienced the kindness of our volunteers, their hesitation turned into something else: gratitude.
As we got to know them, they shared their story—they were homeless and struggling. They asked about our laundry and shower facilities, and we were more than happy to help. While waiting for their clothes to dry, something unexpected happened.
Looking around, seeing the community in action, they wanted to give back. That day, we had served 231 meals in just two and a half hours, and there was plenty to tidy up. Without being asked, they picked up a broom and started sweeping, moving furniture, and helping us reset the space for the next day.
When their laundry was ready, we thanked them for their kindness. But their response was humbling:
“No, it’s me that must be thankful—you have really helped me.”
And that’s the heart of Matthew’s House. It’s not just about food or a warm place—it’s about dignity, community, and the small moments that remind us why we do what we do.
