A Story About Kindness, Community and the Lasting Impact of Encouragement
At Matthew’s House Swansea, we often talk about the importance of showing up, sharing hope and building community. But sometimes we forget just how far those moments can travel.
Recently, one of our volunteers reached their two year milestone with the project, earning their Matthew’s House volunteer hoodie as part of the journey. It was a brilliant moment to celebrate, but what made the story even more special was realising their connection to Matthew’s House actually began years earlier.
Not two years ago.
Not when they applied.
But back in 2017.
Five years before becoming a volunteer, they sat in a school assembly where members of the Matthew’s House leadership team had been invited to speak. The assembly focused on kindness, community, supporting others and the importance of looking after people who are struggling.
The team also shared about Matthew’s House itself. What it was, why it existed and the heart behind the work happening across Swansea.
Something about that moment stuck.
The student later shared that during the assembly they quietly thought to themselves:
“When I’m old enough, I want to volunteer at Matthew’s House.”
And they remembered it.
Five more years of school passed. Life moved on. But the feeling stayed with them.
As soon as they were old enough, they got in touch, checked the volunteering age requirements, and applied to join the team.
Within just a few weeks they were volunteering regularly and over the last two years they have become a hugely valued part of the Sunday team and the wider Matthew’s House family.
Stories like this remind us of something really important.
Sometimes we never fully realise the impact a conversation, a school assembly or a simple moment of encouragement can have on someone’s life. Often it is not only about what you say, but how you make people feel through the way you say it.
A single assembly became a five year seed of inspiration that eventually grew into committed volunteering, community and connection.
Today, with more than 160 volunteers involved across Matthew’s House, we are deeply thankful for every person who gives their time, energy and heart to support others in Swansea.
And moments like this remind us why it matters.
Because sometimes the smallest moments go on to shape something far bigger than we could ever imagine.
A huge well done on reaching two years of volunteering.
The hoodie is very well deserved. 💛
